SAAFE Program Launch

An initiative constructed to build safer and more supportive communities

On Wednesday, 25 September MercyCare proudly acknowledged the launch of a new program named Sharing Advice and Advocacy for Empowerment, also known as ‘SAAFE’.

We marked the launch at our Mirrabooka Community Services Centre, joined by numerous individuals passionate about this cause. Some of the attendees included the Hon Dr. Anne Aly, Senator Fatima Payman, and Mike Martin (Principal Policy Offer at the Department of Communities WA).

Jennie Burns, our Executive Director of Family and Community Services, led the official proceedings and first introduced Lenn Yarran to do the Acknowledgement of Country. Lenn also spoke about the importance of caring for the women in his life, as well as the earth.

Meeting an essential need

MercyCare’s Executive Director of People, Culture and Brand, Martin Wandmaker, welcomed guests and acknowledged the hard work undertaken by the Family and Community Services directorate on creating a program that will address such a vital need in the community.

Martin was followed by Hon Dr. Anne Aly who delivered a heartfelt speech that touched on her own experience with domestic violence. This truly reminded us of why we had gathered to be there that day. We need to strive for women and families to feel safe, seen, and protected.

Guests then were invited to write messages of hope and attach them to a lit-up tree that will remain at the Mirrabooka centre. The opportunity to enjoy delicious catering provided by a business run by one of our MercyCare clients was also offered.

This internal two-year pilot program will focus on early intervention for women, children, Aboriginal, and CaLD communities. It will also include refugees and asylum seekers who are currently accessing MercyCare community services.
