Timed around World Mental Health Day in October, the week emphasises the significance of social connections and the broader social factors that affect people’s mental health.
This year’s theme, “Empowering Communities, Thriving Workforces: A Journey Towards Investing in Our Mental Health,” highlights the need for collective action and support in nurturing both individual and community mental health.
MercyCare Family and Community Services played a key role in the week’s celebrations, hosting a community wellness event at Lakeside Joondalup which showcased MercyCare’s range of support services for children, young people, families and people with a Disability.
Lakeside Joondalup: A Hub of Connection and Support
To kick off Mental Health Week, MercyCare’s Family and Community Service team held a free event at Lakeside Joondalup, marking the second year of this exciting initiative.
The event provided a safe and welcoming space for people of all ages to connect, reflect, and engage in activities designed to promote mental health and wellbeing.
From creative exercises like mindful art and journaling to interactive experiences such as knocking down the “anxiety wall,” attendees had plenty of opportunities to explore mental health in an inclusive and supportive environment.

Participants expressed how much they appreciated the accessibility and inclusivity of the event. For one young person, the chance to attend a free mental health-focused event was a highlight, while others praised the event’s positive experience for people with disabilities.
By fostering conversations about mental health and wellbeing through these activities, the event successfully brought the community together, creating a strong sense of connection and empowerment.

MercyCare’s Mental Health Services: A Lifeline for Youth and Families
As Mental Health Week raises awareness about the importance of mental health and wellbeing, it also shines a light on the vital services MercyCare provides for children, young people, families, and individuals with disabilities who may be facing mental health challenges.
Our programs support young people aged 12-25 and families who need extra assistance in caring for a loved one. While Mental Health Week is an important annual event, MercyCare’s commitment to supporting mental health and wellbeing continues year-round.
Through its range of services, the organisation plays a critical role in helping children, young people, families and people with a disability overcome challenges, empowering them to take charge of their mental health and wellbeing.
The success of this year’s Lakeside Joondalup event and the ongoing impact of MercyCare’s programs demonstrate the importance of community support in promoting mental health.
As we reflect on Mental Health Week 2024, it is clear that investing in our mental health—both individually and collectively—is essential for building thriving, resilient communities
